Special Needs Patients

Experience and Understanding When it Counts

Special Needs Patient

Dr. Hornstein has cared for physically and developmentally challenged special needs patients since 1991. Our Bethesda dental office is handicap-accessible from the parking lot to the treatment rooms. For example, we've made transferring a physically challenged patient from wheelchair to dental chair convenient. We can even move the dental chair and treat the patient as they remain in their wheelchair. Dr. Hornstein has learned many techniques for treating autistic patients, and our team will always do whatever is required to care for our special needs patients as practically and effectively as possible.

The first appointment includes an assessment to determine the patient's needs and also to find out which of our team members is best suited to assist the patient at their appointments. Dr. Hornstein will determine if the patient needs sedation at this time. He doesn't believe that every special needs patient has to be sedated. With one-on-one attention and a few alterations to the traditional way of doing things, Dr. Hornstein often has great success treating special needs patients without administering sedation.

In some cases, a special needs patient is best served under IV sedation at an oral surgeon's office. Dr. Hornstein works closely with an oral surgeon in the area, so he can provide this service when necessary.

Dr. Hornstein is a board member with the Maryland Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and he is affiliated with the following organizations for special needs:

  • CSAAC
  • The Jewish Foundation for Group Homes
  • The ARC Montgomery County
  • Service Coordination
  • CALMRA

Our inviting dental office is conveniently located in Wildwood Medical Center. While most of our patients live in Bethesda, Rockville, Potomac, and Silver Spring, we also have patients who travel from greater distances.
